Why I like Santa Monica

Just a bunch of randomness....

The Santa Monica Promenade is one of my favorite places in town. Not because of it's silly levels of stupid consumerism, or its million billion plastic filled people who I will never talk to, no, it rules for the random bits of conversation I always seem to overhear there. I will provide little bits of the last three times I was there to show the consistent amusement this place brings.

*Steve and I were grabbing a bite at CPK and getting ready to leave, when the conversation in the both behind us starts to heat up and all of a sudden there's over-the-hill woman yelling "If you don't love me anymore just say it." It's cliche, but still so funny in person.

*I was waiting for some friends in front of one of the many movie theatres out there and as I'm waiting there I'm passed by a young (20's/30's) white couple. Right in front of me the woman is nearly shouting at the guy, "Now will you stop making fun of retards?!" Funny yes, but I feel that I missed something far more funny.

*"Will you stop being such a fucking child and shut up." While the content isn't as funny as the others, the context made up for it. Everyone knows hipsters, especially in LA hipsters are everywhere, hipsters are too cool to ever really get into anything, they're always too laid back, so seeing two hipsters screaming at each other outside Barnes & Nobles is just fucking fun.

That's it for Santa Monica, but I feel like typing more, I really should space these out more, but oh well...

Nah fuck it, I'll put my racial profiling story up some other time.

Time changes

Been working over a week now (barely) and already it feels like I have little to no free time.

Not necessarily bad, but its just fucking with my head. I went from spending most of last year working non-stop on either research, classes or my old job that I stayed in for weekends on end. Then when I came back in January I had nothing to do, I read over twenty books in my time off, watched plenty of movies, and did my damnedest to catch up on the missed sleep from the last few years. Now I'm out the door around 7:30 and back after 6 (not bad I know) and it seems like there's always things I'm not doing because of time.

I'm not complaining, I'm happy to be employed even if it is only a 6-month fix. Just odd.

Job's cool, nice people, learning more about the field, getting my first free lunch tomorrow.

Whee!

I start work Tuesday.

It's only 6 months of work, but I'm hoping it'll lead into a more permanent position later on, as I know there are some opening up/starting new in the coming months.

But, it pays the bills, gives me health insurance, and allows me to breath a bit (and of course spend money on things other than ramen again!)

Now that I have a job I must balance things out and decide what concerts I can afford to go to.

Aside from Coachella and QOTSA, those are given (and already bought).

Werd.

Free Time

Q. So, Brian, how much free time do you actually have lately?

A. Well, I was bored last night and decided I needed a database of all my CD's and it's done already.

Yeah, THAT much free time.

Good(I guess) news, it seems I ahve a good chance at getting a 6 month position at USC.
Good = Pay, benefits.
Bad = Not great pay, definitely ending at 6 months when I do it all over again.

It's a start (if I get it).

Good (I'm sure) news, definitely going to Coachella.

Yeah, not too much going on here.

Had another job interview yesterday, I think it went really well and all, but then again I had two really good interviews a few weeks ago and that went nowhere, so good job interviews mean dick.

If it wasn't for the boredom or lack of money I could really dig this unemployed thing. After 5 1/2 years of school and always working, sometimes part-time, sometimes full-times, sometimes more, I really needed time off.

Of course I wish it was less stressed time off, or time-off in a different country like I wanted to do, but it's something so I'll take it for what it's worth. Frankly I'm still catching up on sleep anyway so I don't give a shit either way.

Bad part about it is if I don't get a good lead soon it's going to be time to start hunting down a part-time, or hourly job. Anything, it doesn't matter, but the cash flow won't last forever, speaking of which, time to check the bank account.

Not so good.

12pm : 12:15pm - Eat something (english muffin, soup, or hot pocket)

12:30pm - Check e-mail for resume responses

12:31pm : 2pm - Check job sites for new postings

2:01pm - Check e-mail for resume responses

2pm : 3pm - Browse forums and online comics pretending that since I'm still online it's helping my job search

3:01pm - Check e-mail for resume responses

3:02pm : 3:30pm - Shower, shave, stare at wall

3pm : 4pm - Browse forums and online comics pretending that since I'm still online it's helping my job search

4pm - Check e-mail for resume responses

4:01pm : 5:15pm Jobhunt more even though there really are only about 5 sites that list pertinent jobs for me

5:15 - Check e-mail for resume responses

5:16pm Get pissed at world for not giving me a job

5:17pm : 5:30pm - Have a snack

5:30pm : 7:30pm - Watch a movie/Play PS2 (break at 6:30pm to check e-mail for resume responses)

7:30pm : 8pm - Eat dinner (Hot pocket, ramen, or TV dinner)

8pm - Check e-mail for resume responses

8:01pm : 9:30pm - Think of creative ways to tell people they're ugly

9:30 - Check e-mail for resume responses, finally realize that everyone left work long ago

9:31pm : 12am - Read a book/watch a movie/play PS2/watch roommate play PS2

12am - Think about going to sleep to get up early tomorrow

12:01am : 2am - Read a book/watch a movie/play PS2/watch roommate play PS2

If weekend remove any references to job hunting and replace with "Read a book/watch a movie/play PS2/watch roommate play PS2"
